About this service

We design labels for bottles, jars, tins, pouches and boxes: the brand front, the information panel and the print file. The work covers how the label reads from two metres away on a shelf, how it fits the container's shape, and the technical details printers need. Mandatory wording comes from you or your compliance adviser.

Designing for two metres and two centimetres

A label works at two very different distances. From two metres away, on a shelf among thirty competitors, it has to say what the product is and whose it is. From twenty centimetres, in the buyer's hand, it has to deliver the detail: ingredients, use, origin, the story. Most label problems come from designing only for the second distance.

We test every concept at shelf distance and as a small image on a shop page, where most online buyers first see it. If the product type and brand are not clear at that size, the design goes back. Detail and personality belong on the label too, but only once the basics are readable.

The technical details that delay print runs

Labels go wrong at the printer more than in the design studio. Artwork sized for a flat label is wrapped round a tapered bottle and the text distorts. A thin white font on a dark background fills in on uncoated paper. A barcode printed too small or in a colour scanners cannot read gets rejected by a retailer.

We ask for your printer's specification before designing: label material, print process, bleed, minimum line weight and colour profile. If the container is curved or tapered, we test the artwork on its real shape. Mandatory wording, such as ingredient lists, allergens or hazard symbols, comes from you or your adviser, and we place it at the minimum sizes you confirm.

Questions

Do you check our label is legally compliant?

No. We place the wording and sizes you confirm, and flag anything that looks missing. Food, cosmetics and chemicals each have rules that a qualified adviser should check before printing.

Can you work with our printer?

Yes. We ask for their specification before designing, so the files match their process first time.

Do you supply barcodes?

No. Barcodes must be registered to your company through GS1. We place the barcode you supply at the size scanners need.
