About this service

A custom font gives a brand a voice nobody else can license, and removes per-seat licence fees for commercial fonts. We start with what you actually need: often a display font for headlines or a custom logotype, rather than a full family. Each character is drawn, spaced and kerned, then delivered as OTF and web font files you own.

Most brands need a display font, not a family

A full typeface family for body text, with several weights, italics, extensive language support and careful spacing for long reading, is one of the most demanding jobs in design. It can take a type designer many months. Few businesses need one, and those that do are usually large brands with very wide usage.

What most brands benefit from is a distinctive display font for headlines, signage and packaging, paired with a well-made licensed font for body text. The display font carries the personality; the text font carries the reading. That combination gives a recognisable voice at a fraction of the cost and time of a full family.

Spacing is where fonts succeed or fail

Drawing attractive letters is half the work. The other half is spacing: how much room sits on each side of each letter, and how specific pairs such as "AV", "To" or "Ly" are adjusted so they do not look too far apart or too close. Badly spaced fonts look amateur even when every letter is well drawn.

We test the font in real words and sentences throughout, not just as an alphabet chart, and adjust spacing and kerning for common pairs in the languages you use. The final files are installed and tested in real software before delivery: a word processor, a design tool and a web browser.

Questions

Can you make a full family for body text?

A body text family with several weights and italics is a much larger project and is quoted separately. Most brands are better served by a custom display font paired with a good licensed text font.

Who owns the font?

You do, with no per-user licence fees. You can install it on every machine and use it on the web without limits.

Can you modify a font we already licence?

Most font licences forbid modification. We check the licence first; often the cleaner route is new drawing.
