About this service
We identify the sites that take the search traffic you want, which are often not the companies you think of as rivals. Then we break down why they rank: their content, their links, their site structure and their technical health. You get a short list of gaps you can close and the ones not worth chasing.
Your search competitors are probably not who you think
Ask a business who its competitors are and it names the companies it loses deals to. Ask the search results and you get a different list: a directory, a marketplace, a trade publication, a blog that has been ranking for years, sometimes a government page. Those are the sites taking the clicks, so those are the sites to study.
We build the competitor list from live search results for your main phrases, topic by topic. A company may face one set of rivals for its core service and an entirely different set for its informational content. We also mark which competitors cannot realistically be beaten head-on. Outranking a national marketplace on its home ground is rarely the best use of a small budget.
Finding the reason, not just the gap
A keyword gap report alone tells you what a competitor ranks for. It does not tell you why, and the why decides what you do. If they rank because they have a deep guide and you have a thin page, the fix is content. If they rank with similar content but ten times the links, writing more will not help. If their site is faster and better structured, the fix is technical.
Each gap in the report carries a one-line diagnosis and an effort estimate. Traffic figures from third-party tools are rough, sometimes off by half, so we use them to compare sites against each other rather than as forecasts. The final list is short on purpose. Ten gaps you can close are worth more than three hundred you will never get to.
- Content gaps: topics they cover in depth that you do not cover at all
- Authority gaps: domains linking to two or more competitors but not to you
- Structure gaps: how they group pages into topics and link them together
- Technical gaps: speed and crawl issues that hold your pages back where theirs are clean

Questions
How accurate are the traffic numbers?
Third-party traffic estimates can be off by half in either direction. We use them to compare competitors against each other, never as a figure to plan revenue on.
What if our competitors are marketplaces or directories?
That is common, and we say so. Some of those results cannot be beaten head-on, and the report shows where a listing on them is the better move.
Will you look at their paid ads too?
Only where it explains their organic position. A full paid search comparison belongs with an ad account audit.
