About this service
Copy editing sits between proofreading and rewriting. We fix grammar and spelling, cut repetition, untangle long sentences and make terms, numbers and capitals consistent from page one to the end. Your voice and argument stay yours. Every change is tracked and every question we cannot answer is left as a comment.
Proofreading, copy editing or rewriting: which do you need
These three are often confused, and buying the wrong one is the most common disappointment. Proofreading is a last check for typos and slips in a text that is otherwise finished. Copy editing also changes sentences: it tightens wording, fixes muddled structure inside paragraphs and makes the text consistent. Rewriting changes the content and the argument itself.
A quick test: if you would be happy to publish the text with the spelling fixed, you need proofreading. If you suspect parts of it are hard to follow, repetitive or inconsistent, you need copy editing. If you are not sure the text says the right things at all, you need a content review or a rewrite first.
The style sheet is half the job
Long documents written by several people drift. The same product is spelled three ways. Numbers appear as "10" on one page and "ten" on the next. One chapter says "customers" and another says "clients". Each slip is small. Together they make a document look careless, and readers notice before they can say why.
So before editing line by line, we decide the conventions and log them in a style sheet: spelling standard, capitalisation, how numbers and dates are written, preferred terms. Every later decision follows it, and you keep it for the next document. Points only the author can answer, such as whether a figure is right or which of two names is current, go back as queries instead of guesses.
- Spelling standard and dictionary: British or American, and any exceptions
- Product names, job titles and terms with their agreed form
- Numbers, dates, currencies and units
- Headings, lists and how bullets are punctuated

Questions
What is the difference from proofreading?
Proofreading catches errors in a text that is otherwise finished. Copy editing also changes sentences, wording and consistency. If you are still unsure the text reads well, you want copy editing.
Will you change our tone?
Only where a sentence is unclear. We edit towards your voice, and the style sheet records any choice you might disagree with.
Do you check facts?
We flag anything that looks wrong or inconsistent. Verifying every claim against sources is a separate fact-checking job.
