SSL Certificate
An SSL certificate is a digital security certificate that encrypts data transmitted between a website and its visitors, indicated by the padlock icon and HTTPS in the browser address bar.
An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate creates an encrypted connection between a web server and a visitor's browser. While the technology has technically evolved to TLS (Transport Layer Security), the term "SSL certificate" is still commonly used. When a website has an SSL certificate, all data transmitted between the user and the server is encrypted, making it unreadable to anyone who might intercept it.
This protects sensitive information like login credentials, credit card numbers, personal details, and any other data submitted through forms. SSL certificates work through a process called the "SSL handshake." When a browser connects to a secure website, the server presents its SSL certificate. The browser verifies the certificate is valid and issued by a trusted Certificate Authority (CA).
In practice
- A small business saw a 15% drop in contact form submissions after Chrome started showing "Not Secure" warnings; adding a free Let's Encrypt SSL certificate restored submissions immediately
- An e-commerce store's payment processor required SSL before they could process credit cards, making it a non-negotiable requirement for online sales
- A healthcare website implemented SSL to comply with HIPAA requirements for protecting patient information submitted through appointment request forms
- A blog that switched to HTTPS saw a small but measurable improvement in search rankings within weeks, consistent with Google's HTTPS ranking boost

A senior engineer walks your site, your search presence and the way enquiries reach you, then writes down the three things worth fixing first. You keep the document either way.
