What Is Canonical URL?

A canonical URL is an HTML element that tells search engines which version of a page is the original or preferred one when multiple URLs contain identical or very similar content.
Duplicate content is one of the most common SEO issues on the web. The same page can often be accessed through multiple URLs — with or without www, with different query parameters, through HTTP and HTTPS, or via URL variations created by tracking parameters, session IDs, or print-friendly versions.
The canonical tag (rel="canonical") solves this by telling search engines: "Of all the URLs that have this content, this is the one I want you to index and rank." Search engines then consolidate ranking signals from all duplicate URLs to the canonical version.
Canonical tags are implemented as a <link> element in the <head> section of a page. Self-referencing canonicals (where a page points to itself) are considered a best practice because they proactively prevent duplication issues. Cross-domain canonicals can also be used when content is syndicated across multiple websites.
Canonical tags are a suggestion, not a directive — Google may choose to ignore them if other signals (like internal links) point to a different URL as the canonical. Consistent internal linking that matches your canonical tags reinforces your canonicalization strategy.
Why It Matters
Without canonical tags, search engines have to guess which version of a duplicate page to index. They might choose the wrong one, or worse, split your ranking power across multiple URLs so none of them rank well.
For e-commerce sites with product filtering, pagination, and sorting — which can create thousands of duplicate URLs — canonical tags are essential to maintaining clean, consolidated rankings.
