Impressions measure visibility and reach. Every time your Google ad appears in search results, that's an impression. Every time your social media post shows up in someone's feed, that's an impression. Every time your page appears in search results (even if the user doesn't click), that's an impression.
Impressions are the starting point of the marketing funnel. Before someone can click, convert, or buy, they first need to see your content. High impression counts indicate good visibility and reach; low impressions might signal targeting issues, budget constraints, or low search volume.
Impressions differ from reach. Impressions count total displays (one person seeing your ad 5 times = 5 impressions), while reach counts unique people (5 impressions to 1 person = 1 reach). The ratio of impressions to reach gives you frequency — how many times the average person sees your content.
In SEO, impressions in Google Search Console tell you how often your pages appear in search results. This data reveals keywords you're visible for (even without clicks), seasonal trends, and the total search demand for your content topics.

Impressions are a leading indicator of marketing performance. Before you can improve clicks and conversions, you need sufficient impressions. If your ads or content aren't being seen, nothing else matters.
In SEO, impressions data reveals hidden opportunities. A page with 10,000 monthly impressions but only 100 clicks has a CTR problem, not a visibility problem — improving the title tag and meta description could dramatically increase traffic without any other SEO work.
