A backlink (also called an inbound link or incoming link) is created when one website links to another. If a food blog writes an article and includes a link to your restaurant's website, that's a backlink for your site.
Search engines, particularly Google, use backlinks as one of their primary ranking signals. The logic is straightforward: if many reputable websites link to a page, that page is probably valuable and trustworthy. This concept is at the heart of Google's original PageRank algorithm.
Backlinks are evaluated on several quality factors. The authority of the linking domain matters most: a link from The New York Times is worth far more than a link from a newly created blog. Relevance is also important: a link from a technology review site to a software company is more valuable than a link from a cooking website. Other factors include anchor text, link placement, and whether the link is dofollow or nofollow.
A healthy backlink profile is diverse, with links from many different domains, a natural mix of anchor texts, and links from sites that are relevant to your industry. An unnatural profile, such as hundreds of links from low-quality directories, can actually trigger penalties.
