Responsive images serve different sizes based on the user's screen (a phone doesn't need a 4K image). Lazy loading defers loading images until they're about to scroll into view. Compression reduces file size by removing unnecessary data.
Next-generation image CDNs (Cloudinary, Imgix, Vercel Image Optimization) automate much of this by transforming images on-the-fly — converting formats, resizing, and compressing based on the requesting device and browser capabilities.
For e-commerce and media-heavy sites, image optimization can be the difference between a 2-second and a 10-second page load. Product images, hero banners, and gallery pages are common bottlenecks. A single unoptimized hero image can be larger than the rest of the page combined.
